Unfortunately, no known workaround

I understand it's not the news you were hoping for, but there is no known workaround for this issue. The SPR to investigate changing it is AJAS8JHCK4, but having this work for existing messages was not part of the feature design. If you look back at the Technote you referenced, it does state that it works for new messages, though perhaps it should be a bit more clear and specifically state that it does not work for existing messages.
